  • NFL Hero: Brett Favre.

Minnesota’s Brett Favre became the first NFL player to throw 500 touchdown passes and for 70,000 yards in a losing effort on this day five years ago.

With Favre trying to rally his team, Dwight Lowery returned an interception 26 yards for a touchdown with 1:30 left as the New York Jets beat the Vikings 29-20.

Although now joined in the NFL’s 500-club by Peyton Manning (he got there last year), Favre remains the only quarterback in the history of the league to throw for over 70,000 yards, over 6,000 completions, and over 10,000 pass attempts.

Other memorable events on this day…

1902: The first day of the inaugural Test between South Africa and Australia in Johannesburg.

1996: Nayan Mongia crawled to his one and only Test ton in Delhi in his 13th appearance, and took Australia to the brink of another defeat on the subcontinent.

2003: New Zealand got their Rugby World Cup campaign underway with a crushing 70-7 win over Italy in Melbourne. Wingers Joe Rokocoko and Doug Howlett and fly-half Carlos Spencer all notched two tries each.
