  • Roston Chase picked up a career-best 8-60 in Windies' big win.

Led by an eight-wicket haul by spinner Roston Chase, hosts West Indies crushed England by 381 runs in the first Test between the two sides at Bridgetown.

Having been set an improbable 628 to win by the hosts, England’s openers Keaton Jennings and Rory Burns had held fort for the visitors in a tricky last period of play on day two. However, their partnership did not last too long on day three with Alzarri Joseph dismissing Jennings for 14.

Having bundled England out for a paltry 77 in the first innings, Windies bowlers were made to persevere in the early half of day three with wickets not being easy to come by. Pacer Shannon Gabriel threatened with a fiery spell in the middle which resulted in the dismissal of Jonny Bairstow but there wasn’t much else happening for the fast bowlers on Saturday.

In the end, it was the off-spin of Chase which bamboozled England with the 26-year-year-old finishing with career-best figures of 8-60.

The off-spinner ended Rory Burns’ fighting innings of 84 before running through the England middle-order in devastating fashion.

England's middle-order was blown away by Chase.

England skipper Joe Root, Ben Stokes, Jos Buttler and Moeen Ali all fell to Chase’s spin as the tourists went from 167-3 to 218-7. England’s fairly long tail failed to wag either with Chase picking up three more wickets to complete a rout.

The defeat was the second heaviest in history that England have suffered at the hands of West Indies in terms of runs.

Earlier on day two, a magnificent unbeaten double ton from Windies skipper Jason Holder and a century from Shane Dowrich had helped the hosts pile on the misery on England with the duo forging an unbeaten 295-run stand for the seventh wicket.

The hosts now lead 1-0 in the three-match series with the second Test set to get underway at North Sound on January 31.
